Avatar in 4D, 3D, 2D, 1D

In Hong Kong, we have the 4 dimension version of the film Avatar. But actually, it is not for that film only. The 4-D cinema has been existing in Hong Kong since 2007. A lot of films have their 3-D and 4-D versions showing, including the on-coming Alice in the Wonderland.

Please refer to my article of last week, besides the space show; we still have a peculiar of 4-D movie. So what’s that ? Besides visual effect, you can still have sensational (感觀的) effect. There will be rain and snow falling down inside the cinema, strong wind blowing, so take care of your caps, smoke coming out from each side, lightening effect (so those fallen asleep would wake up) and various smell generating out. As in the film of Avatar, there’s a shot under the waterfall, so water sparkles right upon your head. Even bubbles of vapor will flow upon the air inside. When tear gas shots out, of course the whole cinema will be occupied by real smoke, but would not have the tear gas effect. When the burning of wood or charcoal occurs in the film, you can really smell it. Sometimes I think the ingredients were too strong, that even half an hour after I left the cinema, I still could smell the charcoal. Perhaps it was the relics left down upon my clothes.

So whether it’s a good 4-D movie, I believe the cinema accounts for it very much besides the producer of the film. That is when helicopters are approaching, of course you can feel the wind, but where the wind should come from, right above your head or by sides, it depends on the equipment of the cinema. And how many times the effect will come out in a single movie, of course it is computerized, but the programme can be changed by the cinema also. Besides the special effect, visually the rest of the movie is completely the same as 3-D version, that is you have to put on the spectacles in order to watch the effect, when without those eye-glasses; it will become a vague scene.

So how about the fare ? It’s HK$90 for full fare and $75 for student fare. But in other 3-D IMAX cinema, the fare on Sat is HK$150 and on Tue is $110 only. As for a normal 2-D movie just like 2012, the full fare and student fare will be $70 and $55 respectively. But why the fare is even cheaper than the 3-D movie, for the 4-D cinema is situated at the Hong Kong airport which is quite far away from the downtown area. If you go over from downtown, say from the Polytechnic University of Hung Hum by City Flyer Bus, it takes 75 minutes and the bus fare is $33 for single journey and $66 for round trip. If you travel from Central District by Skyline of MTR, the fare is $100 for single journey and $180 for round trip, but time is half an hour only.

So people would ask is there any people going so far away for just a movie ? If it is 4-D, it’s not only worthwhile, but all tickets are fully booked more than one week ahead. Besides that, there is also an exhibition hall know as Aviation Discovery Centre(航空探知館), where a lot of exhibits can be operated on your own. Anyway, for those that had not been to the Hong Kong Airport or never watched the 4-D movie, it is a must. But for those that had been, I still can tell you there’s a food court in the new airport terminal, which is delicious and not so expensive, and above all, a lot of varieties.

There’s one more version of the Avatar, the 1-D version. Just for kidding ! That is the pirate DVD (盜版光碟)version that you bought back to watch it in your home. Actually, there are a lot of methods to fight against the pirate version. Besides supervision and sweeping, the upgrade of the original version is also very important. Just like 3-D IMAX and 3-D digital version as well as 4-D version and the version of OminMax film (全天域電影) described in last week’s article of the Space Museum.

All these special versions of film had to be watched in special cinemas only; it’s no use to buy back the 1-D version of pirate DVD to watch. So when all the cinemas and produced have upgraded their part, what would happen ? But When God has his church, the devil will have his chapel (道高一呎、魔高一丈). Hope this incessant chase can prompt the movie industry to an upper level and keep on upgrading non-stoppingly. Thus will be the best way to fight against pirate DVD.
