沒有校園的大學 New York University

The famous New York University is on top of the world again. The EMBA course known as “Trium” ranks number 1 in 2014 of the world. It’s a joint course held by the London School of Economics, HEC Paris and Stern Business School of New York University. For the past consecutive 5 years, the number one rank belongs to the joint course of Hong Kong University of Science & Technology and the Kellog School of Northwestern University.

NYU1So how special the New York University is ? Don’t think that it’s a large university with a beautiful campus. It is a university without a campus ! ! ! ! !

The New York University is scattered among the downtown area of Lower Manhattan, in a place known as Greenwich Village. The university does not have a campus, no walls surrounding it, no main entrance, no auditorium, no concourse, no stadium, without this and without that…. but it’s on top of the world. They only have individual buildings along the street side. You can see from the map underneath. It’s not a campus map, but map of Lower Manhattan. For those buildings in blue color are the buildings of New York University. Their concept is the university has already merged together with the city.NYUThey would distinguish it by hoisting a flag of NYU in blue color. It’s the color of their school badge, as in the underneath photos.

A lot of universities in Asia are dreaming to chase up the world class universities in America. Specific appropriations (large amount of fund) are reserved by their government for them to expand, to build new campuses, high rise buildings and quarters. A lot of famous people and merchants are donating large amount of money to have buildings using their name. This also happens in Hong Kong. Billionaires here are donating their buildings in local and mainland universities.

Behold, the New York University does not have high rise buildings, does not have a beautiful campus, but inner beauty is above all. Don’t place so much emphasis on external beauty. It’s just a bonus and not the core.NYU9

A lot of Asian universities are developing their beautiful campuses, but students from 192 countries of the world are still aiming at those American Universities, why ? It’s because of their inner beauty and not outer beauty. Outer beauty is easy to achieve, but inner beauty attracts most. You can easily have a building higher than them, but hard to have a program higher than they are.

Even though they do not have a campus, but their Commencement Day (Graduation Day) is an important event in New York City. There are two world class universities in New York, which are the Columbia University and the New York University. On their Commencement Day, the whole New York will celebrate together. The Empire State Building will show the light of their school badge on one day and the other on the following day. When you put on their graduation gown and wish to take a taxi, New Yorkers will let you take a taxi first. A lot of restaurants around these universities will give you a free drink of coffee when you are in graduation gown.

The prestige is commendable (難能可貴), can cannot replace by any beautiful campus. For all of them understand that inner beauty is above all ! ! ! ! !!It is not easy to enter the New York University and Columbia University, and not easy to graduate over there.Empire-State-Building-New-YorkTheir graduation day is known the Commencement Day. They view it from another angle; it’s the beginning of a new cycle, beginning of work; while Chinese like to say it’s the end of studies. But their concept is studies will never end even if you are as old as me.

The New York University has  to rent a stadium for their graduation ceremony which is the Yankee Stadium for they don’t have a stadium or an auditorium like your university having. NYU4

NYU5So if you want to take a taxi in New York and do not want to line up, just like me, but only valid on the Commencement Day.  WP_20140522_002
